The Reverend Frances Manly began her life in Mississippi in a
Southern Presbyterian family and once had visions of being
a medical missionary to China, handing out Bibles with one
hand and aspirin with the other. As she grew up, her family
moved northward and eastward, not only into new places
but also into increasingly liberal churches, a path that
brought her home after much wandering to Unitarian
Universalism and the ministry.
Over the years, she has taught English in a women’s junior
college, computer programming and application in a boys’
Roman Catholic high school, yoga and meditation, and the
occasional cooking class. She has served as Director of the
Himalayan Institute of Buffalo, Director of Religious
Education at the UU Church in Buffalo New York, Interim
Director of the Modified Residency Program at
Meadville/Lombard Theological School, and Director of the
Renaissance Program, which provides basic training for UU
religious educators. She received her M.Div. degree from
Meadville Lombard in 1997.
In the community, she is currently active in Clergy Caucus of
NOAH, the Niagara Organizing Aliance for Hope, and serves
as co-President of the Network of Religious Communities of
Western New York.
