This I Believe...
A collection of views from UU church members
This I Believe...
The concept of "This I believe…" began in the autumn of 2008 during a discussion of
Sunday Services among Ed Tormay, Yvonne Stocker and Rev. Terry Kime.
The idea was stimulated by two aspects of Sunday Service:
1. Ed observed that as Unitarian Universalism is non-creedal we tend to assume that all
are 'together' in our liberal religious beliefs - that is not necessarily so! How are we to
learn from each other and accept differing ideas without judgment if we are ignorant of
each other’s ideas?
2. Some visiting speakers prefer to omit the "Story for All Ages"; consequently,
choosing a relevant or connected story is difficult and the service may become disjointed
and irritating to those members who don't like the Story anyhow.
Thus the idea was born! An opportunity - once a month for one member to provide a
personal statement of their belief. This statement is an implicit testimonial of our
church since it can and should be made fearlessly and openly - our freedom of the pulpit
provides a safe environment to disclose an answer to one of the 'difficult questions' - as
it is a monologue without any provision for rebuttal from anyone.
