This I Believe...

By Shari B.
December 2009

I am not interested in creating a god in my own image, then sitting back and waiting for
him to fix things, or in pondering where I will go and what will happen to me when I die.  I
believe in the power of walking my talk here and now.

I believe we have a responsibility as human beings, alive on this planet, each with particular
passions and gifts, to use these to consciously create a better world, because we are the
ones we've been waiting for.  And each of us is connected to every other thing that exists.
I believe in the power of conscious creativity.

I believe we've forgotten who we are and we need to remember.  We must reconnect with
our authentic stories and put aside the stories others tell about us.  Authentic stories show
us a sense of possibility and lead to a growth in consciousness and potential.  Inauthentic
stories lead us into contraction and forgetfulness.  I believe in the power of authentic
stories.

I believe in listening and paying attention to what others have to tell us as a way of getting
beyond our surface differences and arriving at an understanding of what we have in
common.  No matter how much money we have in our wallets, where we live, or who we
love, we are all human beings muddling through this life, trying to find meaning in the midst
of it all.  I believe in the power of listening.

I believe we must attempt to build a culture of creativity even as we make our escape from
the crumbling ruins of this culture of consumption.  We need to rediscover the joys and
satisfactions of making things with our hands, heads, and hearts.  I believe in the power of
artists and artisans, writers and poets, cooks, creators, people with fresh ideas and those
who are willing to try new things just to see what will happen—because you'll never know
unless you try.  These people give us glimpses of what other worlds may be possible.

I believe we must never stop learning through experience—about ourselves, other people,
and all that dwells in this universe.  And we must tell what we learn so that others may
learn from us.  I believe in the power of experience and ideas.

I am not interested in belief for the sake of believing.  I am not interested in belief in the
form of doctrine or dogma.  I am not interested in belief without action—this is useless.  I
believe in the power of thoughtful, productive, caring human action to change the world in
miraculous ways.
