This I Believe...

By Shelly C.

I was about 16, I thought I knew just about everything. I thought I had the important
things figured out. As I got older (as Madison has pointed out recently, I am 60) I have
realized the more I learn, the more I had to admit how little I knew. So tomorrow I am not
for sure what I will believe, but today…

I Believe…

If we take the cover and the title from THE BOOK--the book which every religion has for
their believers to follow--we find the same basic structure: A guide for humans to live the
best possible way in harmony. Although it seems debatable, no religion or any one God
owns goodness, morality, righteousness, thoughtfulness, faithfulness, devotion, giving, or
loving. These actions are owned by every living being.

Give yourself credit for your good deeds and also take responsibility for your destructive
behavior. Own them both.

I believe that all living things have value. Some humans contribute more to the human race
in a greater capacity. Some animals or humans are just there--there for someone to take
care of. Whether it be a helpless infant or a dying elder, an animal in the wild or a pet, all
are needed to complete the circle of life.

I believe that for children to give respect to others they first need to receive respect. The
one piece of advice I give to all young parents on raising children is show your child
respect. Show them no less respect than you would give to the most honorable humans on
Earth. Is your child any less valuable?

I believe we are so fortunate to have been born to the human race. It does sadden me to
think of so many hungry and hurting people and animals here and in other countries. If only
we could all see that we are alone and the same, on this ball floating through space,
inhabiting this place called Earth. Knowing that living things have inhabited this earth for
millions of years, we are all the same. Made of the same molecules as our solar system,
which has been in existence for billions of years. How great is it that we now know we are
a part of this grand galaxy and this massive universe?
