COMMITTEES AND AREAS OF CHURCH LIFE
It is the members and friends of our congregation who keep it the vital and engaging place we want it to be.
The many areas of church life listed below offer opportunities for each one to share their interests and gifts,
and provide a contact person in each area so that ideas, suggestions and questions can be shared. If you
would like to join a committee or group listed below, please contact the person listed for it. If the position is
open, please contact our Board President, Marge Gillies.
Children Religious Exploration/Education : Erica
Plans, organizes, and implements the Sunday programs for children. They also manage the child care.
Worship : Marge, Betsy, Peter
Plans, organizes, and implements the Sunday worship programs in conjunction with the minister. This includes
arranging for speakers and service coordinators.
Caring Circle : Judy B
This committee has the responsibility of the oversight of our lay ministry of caring for each other and leads the
Joys and Sorrows section of our Sunday morning service. Members of the committee. Members of the
committee attended a training program led by the minister.
Social : Marie
Plans, organizes, and implements activities for Members and guests primarily for social interaction and fun.
Adult RE, Book Group, etc : Judy B
Selects and directs regular and special meetings to discuss interesting important issues, ideas, or other
serious matters.
Membership: Open
Provides for the invitation to, and education about, membership for newcomers. Welcomes and supports
integration of new members into the life of the church.
Weekly email update : Erica
Compiles and emails an update on current Church activities weekly.
Powerline :
Compiles, edits, and distributes the Church newsletter.
Website : Peter D
Updates, maintains, and improves the Church website. This is for both to introduce the Church to non
Members and as a method of communicating with Members.
Forum : Open
Forums are organized community discussions on important issues usually conducted in the Church. This
committee plans, organizes, and implements these forums.
Outreach Donations : Janet, Betsy
Selects and designates recipients of our Plate donations once each month.
Denominational Affairs :
This committee, or a single person, coordinates communications and activities with the UUA, denominational
district, and area UU Churches (Cluster).
Social Responsibility (Action) :
This is an oversight committee to organize, coordinate, communicate, and encourage participation as both
individuals and groups in social service and concerns.
PR and publicity : Janet
Achieve announcements and coverage of the Church and its events in various media.
Phone tree : Jean A
Implements a system of telephoning all Members whenever requested to rapidly communicate important
information.
Building and Grounds : Peter D
This committee is responsible for the maintenance and care of the Church building, its grounds, and all its
physical systems such as heating, plumbing, electrical, sound, etc. This includes cleaning and repairing it
after each use, lawn care, snow removal, and painting. The objective is to have the building clean,
comfortable, functional, and attractive at all time. This committee also implements any capital projects
concerning the building.
Collecting and Distributing Email, US Mail, and Telephone messages : Judy B
It is the responsibility of this person to see to it that all these incoming communications are received, dealt
with, or distributed to the appropriate person(s).
Growth (Planning for) Committee :
This committee is not responsible for congregational growth, but for learning about and discerning which
practices best support growth in our congregation and encouraging the exploration of these. This committee
is responsible for our participation in a 3 year program entitled “Planning for Growth in Small Congregations”
conducted by our UU district. They share this program with our entire Church and lead our efforts.
Staff Management : Peter D
Supervises, evaluates, supports and administers the Church staff.
Scheduling Coffee Hour Hosts, Ushers, etc : Marie
Normally an annual task of assigning individuals to specific dates to do these important tasks.
Archives : Janet
Preserves organizes the Church records to make them useful and available both now and in the future.
Acquires and preserves new records, both of current occurrences and historic events which were not in
possession of the Church. Produces documentation of memories of living participants and witnesses of past
Church events.
Rental Management : Marie
Manages rental of the Church building to outside groups. This includes setting a rental agreement, arranging
for the building to be ready, open, closed, and cleaned after each rental.
Pledge Drive : Teresa L. and Marie
Plans, organizes, and implements the annual pledge drive to provide financial support for the Church.
Fund Raising Projects : Marie and Marge
Develops activities to raise funds to financially support the Church.
Finance Committee : Treasurer, Financial Secretary, Board President
Oversees the financial well being of the church. Creates pledge statements. Reviews the Church’s
investments, making any recommendations to the Board. This committee is also responsible to draft a
proposed budget for the next year for presentation to the Board and the Congregation at the Annual Meeting.
