First Unitarian Universalist Church

Becoming The People The World Needs
Community Involvement & Activities

On Sunday, Jan. 20, our regular "outreach
offering" will be collected for the Mental Health
Assoc. of Niagara County.  Many of our church
members have worked with this worthy agency, or
been on its board.  Back in the '60s our then
Minister, Don Johnston, was on the board and he
was instrumental in starting the "God Squad" – a
group of religious leaders who went out to the
county jail to counsel inmates.  If you can't attend
church that day and wish to make a donation to the
Mental Health Association, please send a check to
the treasurer well marked that it is for the Mental
Health Association donation.
Each month the First Unitarian Universalist Church
of Niagara dedicates one Sunday offering to a
community organization that demonstrates the
ideas of the principals of the church.
Outreach Offering
The First UU Church of Niagara is one of the
founding members of  NOAH, the Niagara
Organizing Alliance for Hope.  NOAH is a
congregation-based community organizing project
affiliated with  Gamaliel Foundation; according to
its mission statement, its members  “come
together to secure and extend the quality of life in
their  communities throughout Niagara County.”
Eighteen congregations from  Niagara Falls and its
surrounding towns and from Lockport are
currently members of NOAH, which is currently
working with public  officials at the local and state
level to increase local hiring in  all projects funded
through government contracts.

    News from NOAH

Accountability Meeting with Public Officials:  At
the previous accountability meeting in February,
the public officials who agreed to work with
NOAH on local hiring initiatives reaffirmed their
commitment. On April 20, NOAH will meet with
them again to receive their progress reports,
including the actual language to intend to include
in legislation and contracts.  Everyone with an
interest in NOAH is encouraged to attend the
meeting at 2 PM at St. James United Methodist
Church, 4661 Porter Road (the church where the
Public Meeting was held last November).  Good
attendance is important to remind to the
politicians that NOAH is not just a few individuals
but represents a very large constituency.

NOAH Leadership Training:  several times a year,
the Gamaliel Foundation, NOAH’s parent
organization, offers week-long training to those
who are or will be active in their local
organizations.  The more people who get trained
from as many congregations as possible, the
more effective NOAH’s work will be.  Two
trainings are offered this summer:  one starting
July 22 in Hampton, VA, and one starting August
12 near Chicago.  NOAH will pay all fees, plus
transportation, for member of a NOAH
congregation who attends.  If you think you
might be interested, please speak with Rev.
Frances.  For more information on what the
training is like and the personal benefits of
attending, speak with Bonnie Soley, who
attended a training last year.
