We at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Niagara are committed to helping other Churches or
anyone else install an inductive loop so people with a hearing loss can participate. Our experience using
such as system has been very favorable. Witnessing members of our Congregation become fully included
has been an emotional experience for us. We want other Congregations to have this experience.
Of all institutions, Churches should not exclude people merely because they have a hearing loss. This is
exactly what they are doing if they do not provide an effective assistive hearing system. Installing an
inductive loop system is affordable to even the smallest Churches. No Church would say to anyone, “We
do not care if you can participate in our program.”, but that is exactly what they are saying to people with
hearing losses in too many cases. This is the message they give if they do not provide and use an
effective system. That system can not consist of only amplifying the sound. It must include specific
provisions for people with hearing losses. FM and Infrared assistive hearing systems are good, but not as
good as an inductive loop. They are also usually much more expensive than a loop and they require more
maintenance and upkeep. Furthermore they are more invasive of the privacy of the user by requiring that
he or she obtain and use special equipment. An inductive loop system only requires that the person using
it turn the “T” switch in their own hearing aid. Then the high quality electronics of the hearing aid produces
a much better sound with minimal background noise.
A Member of our Church made the following statement:
Several years ago, I experienced hearing loss requiring hearing aids is both ears. Fortunately I
attended the First Unitarian Universalist Church that was willing to listen to those whose hearing was
fading.
Thanks to the inductive loop and a setting in my hearing aid called a “T” switch, with a simple touch
to my hearing aids, I can hear perfectly, as though the speaker was speaking directly in my ears!
This simple, inexpensive system is a snap to install. The “loop” profoundly impacted my quality of life
in church and I have become an advocate for any hall or gathering space.
After years of attending events and experiencing the frustration of wasted time spent trying to hear,
people’s lives can literally be transformed. You owe it to your business, religious institution,
organization or civic hall to find out about the loop.
Members of our Congregation will help any Church or other group establish an inductive loop assistive
hearing system in the following ways, all at no cost:
* Demonstrations of our system at any time
* Consultation
* Loan of the few tools we purchased to install our loop
* Provide a loaner amplifier to any organization ready to try an inductive loop in their facility
* Help in the installation
* Maintain a few web pages to provide and share information about inductive loops
* Encouragement
We will share in the celebration of the completed system by seeing the pleasure of people with hearing
losses being included. Their smiles make it worthwhile many times over!
